Managua (Agenzia Fides) - Hurricane Otto continues to hit Central America with torrential rains and strong winds (see Fides 23/11/2016). In Costa Rica, the authorities have evacuated 4,000 people in the northern Caribbean coast of the Country and ordered the closure of schools for the entire week.
Since torrential rains are expected in some areas, even government offices have been closed. In Nicaragua, in addition to the evacuation of 10,000 people and the closure of schools, the worst is feared for farmers and coffee crops. In a statement issued by the Episcopal Conference of the Country, sent to Fides, the Bishops invite the entire population to follow the instructions of the national and regional authorities in order to ensure their safety and prevent further damage. The Bishops also invite to pray for people, families and communities involved in the hurricane. According to the US Centers of Hurricane Control in Miami, the tropical storm is the seventh hurricane of the 2016 season, with winds blowing at 120 kilometers an hour.
