AMERICA/GUATEMALA - Meeting of the Bishops of Central American SEDAC has begun, prayers for the victims of hurricane Otto

Guatemala City (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishops of the Episcopal Secretariat of Central America (SEDAC) opened their annual meeting yesterday afternoon, in the chapel of the Marist Brothers Center in Guatemala City. According to the note sent to Fides, there are 65 Bishops, from El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama and Honduras, who are participating in the meeting, from 22 to 25 November, to discuss and reflect on the situation of the region in the light of the magisterium.
On the agenda there are issues such as the situation of families, marriage annulment process (Amoris Letitia post-synodal Exhortation), the ecological problem (Laudato Sì), the organization of World Youth Day 2019. Another theme on the agenda concerns the celebration of 75 years of this Central American organization. The Bishops will also elect the new leadership of SEDAC, currently chaired by the Archbishop of Panama, His Exc. Mgr. José Domingo Ulloa Mendieta.
During the opening of the meeting, Msgr. Ulloa Mendieta invited to pray for the dead caused by hurricane Otto yesterday, which hit Central America. According to agencies, two adults died swept away by a landslide and a minor was killed by a fallen tree because of prolonged rains. The emergency services of Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua have declared high alert for the coastal areas of the Caribbean. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 23/11/2016)
