AFRICA/SOUTH AFRICA - South African faithful mobilized to help Haiti devastated by hurricane Matthew

Johannesburg (Agenzia Fides) - A special collection for Haiti on the three last Sundays of November. This is the initiative launched by His Exc. Mgr. Sithembele Sipuka, Bishop of Umtata and Vice President of the SACBC (Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference). Haiti has been brought to its knees by hurricane Matthew, which hit the Caribbean Country on October 4, causing widespread flooding, destroying houses and uprooting trees.
According to the Department of Civil Protection in Haiti, 546 people died, while 128 are still reported missing. 439 are wounded and more than 175,500 have lost their homes. The UN says 1 million and 400,000 people in the Caribbean nation are in urgent need of help.
"The damage caused by the hurricane is the worst in the history of Haiti", said the Bishop. Sithembele recalls that in addition to the victims, survivors need food, clean water and medical care. The funds collected by the South African faithful will then be donated at the end of November to the Haitian Bishops' Conference as well as those received after that date. (L.M.)
