Merida (Agenzia Fides) - Pregnancy among adolescents is one of the main factors that contribute to maternal and infant mortality and to diseases and poverty. This is what was stated in the Maternal and Perinatal Health Program of Health Services in Yucatan. The phenomenon, in fact, leads to negative social and economic consequences for the girls involved, who are forced to leave school and have fewer opportunities to find decent work. An initial study carried out in 2015 highlight that 1.52% of the population under 15 years of age is involved. In addition, 29.77% of the total perinatal visits were women between 15 to 19 years of age. From January to September 2016 there was an increase of 0.04% compared to last year, among the adolescents under 15 who went to prenatal visits; while a decline of 0.88% was recorded in the age group 15 to 19 in the same period. To try to limit the phenomenon of early pregnancies, the Health Services in Yucatan have committed to implement strategies aimed at the prevention and assistance to adolescents.
