Manila (Agenzia Fides) - No to nuclear power in the Philippines: the position of President Rodrigo Duterte, who has rejected to revive the nuclear power plant in Bataan province (west of Manila) and assured that during his term in office the nuclear power plants will not operate, was welcomed by the Catholic Church in the country.
Bishop Ruperto Santos, Bishop of Balanga, said that the President expressed "his concern and care for people and the environment". Welcoming the announcement of Duterte, the Bishop recalled that the vast majority of citizens of Bataan province strongly oppose the revival of the power plant project, built between 1958 and 1986 and never operated.
"The project of reviving the nuclear plant is very dangerous - notes the Bishop in a note sent to Fides - and would only be a source of corruption". The Church, said the Bishop, "hopes for the use of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind or hydroelectric power". The proposal to reactivate nuclear power plants in Filipppine had been raised by some politicians to bring down the high cost of electricity. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 08/11/2016)
