Buenos Aires (Agenzia Fides) - "One month after Father Juan Viroche’s death (see Fides 06/10/2016), the National Commission for Justice and Peace considers it appropriate to reflect on the challenge of combating drug trafficking and the consequent sufferings that addiction causes in many of our brothers", says the statement sent to Fides by the Episcopal Conference of Argentina.
"Father Juan bravely faced the mafias who manage the drug trade, and had threatened him and others in his community. The circumstances of his tragic death have yet to be clarified by the authorities, but in any case, has revealed an unusual and intolerable seriousness of the situation", the text continues.
The Commission denounces the large sums of money that derive from the drug business, "it is stained with blood money, blood of the poor, because drugs harm children and young people", and of the presence of gangs that have infiltrated even the institutions of society. The document ends with a call to work together in the prevention and calls the authorities to constantly watch over this terrible situation: "We can all be protagonists in prevention, education, assistance or in denouncing, in order to bring an end to this scourge".
