AFRICA/SOUTH AFRICA - Report on Corruption: vote of no confidence against President Zuma

Johannesburg (Agenzia Fides) - The opposition announced a vote of no confidence against South African President Jacob Zuma after the publication of an official report in which "evidence of possible corruption at the top level of his government" are denounced. The 355-page document, titled "State of Capture", was drawn up by former anti-corruption chief Thuli Madonsela and focuses on the relationship between President Zuma and the powerful Gupta family.
The Gupta, Indian-origin entrepreneurs who settled in South Africa in the '90s, have different activities in the mining, transport industry, media and hi-tech industry.
The report, of which Zuma has tried in vain to prevent the publication, raises suspicions about the influence of the Gupta family on the appointment of some ministers. A fact that had been stigmatized by the South African Bishops (see Fides 18/03/2016).
Yesterday, on November 2, the wait for the publication of the report triggered the protest through the streets of Pretoria of activists of the EFF Economic Freedom Fighters of Julius Malema and other thousands of ordinary citizens. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 03/11/2016)
