Juba (Agenzia Fides) - In South Sudan there are currently about 16,000 child soldiers involved in local armed groups and the national army. So far this year other 800 have been recruited. An initiative promoted by the United Nations Fund for Children (UNICEF) launched a negotiation for the release of 145 child soldiers recruited by the two rebel groups in the Country, the Cobra Faction and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO). Once the children are released, they will be unarmed, assisted and reintegrated in society and in their families. South Sudan has been independent since 2011, and two and a half years later entered in a civil conflict which has caused thousands of deaths and more than two million and 500,000 displaced, resulting in a serious humanitarian crisis.
