Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - "Need to also face the issue of security in North Kivu". This is the appeal launched by the Study Centre for the Promotion of Peace, Democracy and Human Rights (CEPADHO) in Beni, in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, to the participants at the Summit of the Heads of State of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (CIRGL) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which opened on October 26 in Luanda, capital of Angola. The political crisis in the DRC and the agreement reached by the presidential majority and by a part of the opposition, to hold elections by April 2018 (see Fides 18/10/2018) is at the center of the Summit.
"In addition to political issues (...) CEPADHO wants to bring the security context to the attention of the Region’s executives", said a statement sent to Agenzia Fides. "Our organization urges the Heads of State to assume the conclusions of the recent meeting of the Defense and Interior Ministers of the CIRGL and SADC held in Kinshasa on the emerging issues of terrorism in Beni".
"CEPADHO brings to the attention of Heads of State that ADF terrorists (Allied Democratic Forces) who continue to massacre and abduct civilians in the city and in the territory of Beni, in North Kivu, are a serious threat to peace and the security of the Region", the statement concluded.
