Accra (Agenzia Fides) - "We should always remember that we have only one Country called Ghana and that, this Country is the only home that we have", said His Exc. Mgr. Joseph Osei-Bonsu, Bishop of Konongo-Mampong and President of the Conference Bishops of Ghana, in his opening address to the Plenary Assembly of Ghanaian Bishops in Tamale. Mgr. Osei-Bonsu wanted to warn Ghanaians to avoid violence before, during and after the presidential and parliamentary elections of 7 December, and prevent them from unleashing "a post-election war". "We do not want to be refugees in neighboring Countries". he stressed.
Mgr. Osei-Bonsu appealed to Ghanaians "to avoid tribal politics and let politicians try to win votes on the basis of the good messages that they will present rather than through vote buying".
In his welcome speech Mgr. Philip Naameh, Archbishop of Tamale, launched an appeal to the next government after the December 7 elections, to consider creating two more regions out of the Northern Region. According to Mgr. Naameh, this is a way to ensure the equitable distribution of resources towards addressing poverty, illiteracy and other developmental challenges that were contributing to prolong conflicts in the region.
