Miami (Agenzia Fides) - The general responsible of schools in Miami-Dade, Alberto M. Carvalho, announced that following the crisis caused by hurricane Matthew, employees and students in the area are organizing relief operations and assistance to victims in Haiti. The organizations that will lead this commitment are the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Miami and Father Reginald "Reggie" Jean-Mary, of the Catholic church of Notre Dame d'Haiti in Miami. In Miami there is the largest community of Haitians living in the United States.
"The people of Haiti are an integral part of our community and the world community, they are our brothers and sisters", said Alberto M. Carvalho who announced the plan of action on Sunday, October 9, during the Mass in the church of Notre Dame d'Haiti in Miami. "In less than ten years, Haiti has been ravaged by natural disasters. Public schools in Miami-Dade will join forces once again with Father Reggie and Catholic Charities to mobilize our resources, our associations to help the people of that nation to rebuild their country".
Today, October 12, the collection of food to send to Haiti begins, with a specific appeal for baby food.
Hurricane Matthew devastated in particular the south western part of Haiti on October 4, destroying homes, flooding villages, destroying crops, isolating different parts of the country (see Fides 08/10/2016). Reports inform that about 900 people have been killed and 350,000 are in need of help. According to UNICEF, Haiti is facing the biggest humanitarian crisis following the 20101 earthquake. Public health officials are concerned that the lack of drinking water, food and shelter, could aggravate the cholera epidemic in the country (see Fides 11/10/2016). (CE) (Agenzia Fides 12/10/2016)
