AMERICA/PERU - Seven out of 10 children victims of abuse

Lima (Agenzia Fides) - 74% of boys and girls and 81% of adolescents in Peru suffer abuse. This is what emerged in the IV National Meeting for Early Childhood, being held in Lima. On this occasion the Ministry of women and vulnerable populations of Peru launched a campaign with the motto: "Without beating or humiliating, it is time to change", to make adults aware, through videos, of the effects abuse has on the emotional and physical health of children. According to the National Research on social relations (ENARES), 74% of boys and girls between 9 and 11 years of age, at least once suffered physical or psychological violence by people with whom they live. In the case of adolescents, between 12 and 17 years of age, the percentage rises to 81%. According to ENARES, 75 children out of 100 were victims of physical or psychological violence by pupils of the school they attend. 71.1% had suffered psychological violence, 36.3% were victims of physical and psychological abuse and 40.4% physical abuse.
