AFRICA/SOMALIA - Restructuring of the Somali intelligence; Turkey announces the opening of its first base in the Country

Mogadishu (Agenzia Fides) - 1,500 officers and intelligence agents in Somalia have been dismissed, including the head-center of the capital, Mogadishu. This was decided by General Abdullahi Gafow, according to whom the dismissed staff was not able to carry out the tasks assigned to deal with the onset of the Shabaab. The Somali jihadists were responsible for several attacks in the capital, the last on October 1, where at least three people were killed in a car bomb in front of a restaurant in an area near the general headquarters of intelligence.
The agency security reshuffle comes less than two months before the presidential elections on November 30 that the Shabaab have announced their intention to sabotage with bombings and attacks.
In the Country there is an African Union military force acting on a UN mandate in support of the fragile central government security forces.
The extra African country which has pledged to help Somalia is Turkey, which announced the forthcoming opening of its first military base in the Country. It is a structure in which 200 military from Ankara will train 10,000 Somali soldiers and others from all over Africa.
