Buenos Aires (Agenzia Fides) - Yesterday afternoon, 14 September, the leaders of the "Central General de Trabajadores" (CGT - Central Workers' Union) throughout the country, met with His Exc. Mgr. José María Arancedo and His Exc. Mgr. Carlos Malfa, respectively President and Secretary general of the Argentine Episcopal Conference (CEA), as part of a series of talks of the CGT with various sectors of society to raise awareness of the seriousness of the national situation.
Trade unionists indeed expressed their concerns to the Bishops for the serious economic and social situation, for the increase in unemployment that is generating not only a rise in poverty but also drug trafficking, for the economic measures of the national government, for the difficulties concerning dialogue with its representatives. They also talked about the value of unity of workers and the work culture.
Mgr. Arancedo thanked the union leaders, which took place in the interest of the whole society, as informs the note sent to Fides by the CEA, because trade unionism is a service, but at the same time also a central element of responsible presence in the world of work.
The Bishops highlighted that many of the issues raised are present in the Social Doctrine of the Church, they reiterated the importance of work, and that man must always be at the center of the social question, this implies an anthropology that overcomes individualism and recognizes others as brothers.
The President of the CEA finally urged the unionists to explore all the possibilities of dialogue.
It is not up to the Church to convene the dialogue, but offer a space for the meeting.
At the end, the Bishops gave union leaders a copy of the document "The Bicentennial. Time for fraternal meeting of the Argentines" which includes an analysis of the situation and some prospects for the country. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 15/09/2016)
