ASIA/PAKISTAN - A Catholic at the head of the interfaith office in the province of Sindh

Karachi (Agenzia Fides) - The Catholic Anthony Naveed has been promoted to serve as the Chief Minister’s special assistant with particular responsibilities in the interfaith harmony office, which has the task of promoting tolerance and harmony among the different religious communities in the province. As Fides learns, Anthony Naveed, a member of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), was called by the Prime Minister of Sindh province, Syed Murad Ali Shah and is the first Christian member in Sindh to reach this post.
Naveed told Fides: "I will strive to build a society where there is no place for discrimination, hatred and inequality due to religion or sect. It was Benazir Bhutto’s mission to develop a society where there would be acceptance and tolerance among people of different religions. Since 2012, the government has been pursuing this vision to promote interfaith harmony".
"It is a very challenging task to bring together all members of all religions in a single platform. The next step is to organize workshops and seminars for members and leaders of various faiths, to then form district-level groups that facilitate the promotion of interfaith harmony in the various cities".
Anthony Naveed, a graduate in Political Science, started his political commitment in the PPP in the early 90s. He was an active member of the Youth Commission of the Archdiocese of Karachi from 1998 to 2005. (PA-AG) (Agenzia Fides 06/09/2016)
