Lusaka (Agenzia Fides) - The Constitutional Court of Zambia rejected the appeal filed by Hakainde Hichilema, the defeated candidate in the presidential election by outgoing President, Edgar Lungu, paving the way for his inauguration. According to the Constitution, the defeated candidate may challenge the result in
court if there is the suspect that the vote was rigged.
Zambia's Constitutional Court granted
Hichilema an extension to hear and rule on the case beyond last Friday's cut-off date to give him more time to present his case. The constitutional provision says that they cannot go beyond 14 days and hearing the case beyond last Friday means they will be hearing the case outside the constitutional provision.
The elections were characterized by tensions, linked also to the difficult economic situation of the Country, while the major Christian denominations have denounced the censorship of independent media (see Fides 01/09/2016). (L.M) (Agenzia Fides 05/09/2016)
