Antakya (Agenzia Fides) - "During the night the imams at short intervals launched appeals from the loudspeakers of mosques, in addition to prayers, inviting everyone to take to the streets to express their support for the government and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan". This was referred to Agenzia Fides by Father Paolo Pugliese OFMCap, who carries out his pastoral service at the Catholic parish of Antakya, the ancient Antioch on the Orontes, where St. Peter and St. Paul, St. Luke and St. Barnabas lived, and where for the first time the disciples of Jesus were called Christians.
The testimony from Antakya, capital of Hatay Province, which borders Syria, confirms that even in smaller urban centers in Turkey there were demonstrations against the coup attempt carried out by sectors of the Turkish armed forces in the late evening of Friday 15 July. Even in Antakya a considerable part of the population took to the streets of the center chanting slogans. Today is a very calm day. Everyone knows that Erdogan took over the situation, but is waiting to see how the story evolves and what the consequences of the failed coup are.
Sources of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople refer to Fides that in the hectic hours of the attempted coup of State, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, currently abroad for a period of rest, sent a message to the people - clergy and laity - currently in the patriarchal office overlooking the Golden Cord, in Istanbul, providing them with precautionary measures on how to behave and deal with the situation.
