Colombo (Agenzia Fides) - To eradicate drug trafficking in Sri Lanka and save young people especially children from drug addiction: is the appeal launched by Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo, following a Catholic school headmaster’s complaint who discovered 15 students involved in heroin and marijuana consumption.
"We have to speak out against drug traffickers who often push drugs near schools. Severe and restrictive laws are urgently needed", added the Cardinal during a public conference, since some drugs entering the country are passed off as "medicines". Cardinal Ranjith also urged religious leaders, police, educators and politicians to assume their responsibilities and to come together to confront and defeat the scourge of drug trafficking and the spread of drug addiction. The Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo, Mgr. Maxwell Silva announced a protest march for July 30 in the diocese of Colombo, which will involve parishes, associations, Christian movements and other civil society organizations.
