Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) - The Council for the Pastoral Care of Fishermen (CPP), linked to the Episcopal Commission for the pastoral care of the service of charity, justice and peace, of the Bishops' Conference (CNBB), presented the report "Social-Environmental Conflicts and violations of human rights in traditional fishing communities in Brazil".
The presentation, informs a note of the PMS in Brazil sent to Fides, took place at the headquarters of the CNBB in Brasilia, on July 13, with the participation of representatives of the CPP, members of other sectors of social pastoral and fishermen threatened by conflict. The report in addition to analyzing the causes of conflicts also sheds light on the strategies organized by the community to validate their rights.
"This report is important because it gives visibility and denounces cases of human rights, social, environmental and cultural violations, such as the struggles in defense of the fishing community territories", said the President of the Episcopal Commission for the pastoral care of the service of charity , justice and peace, Fr. Olavio Dotto.
The publication contains a collection of information on violence suffered by the artisanal fishing communities and fishermen who live in inland waters and along the Brazilian coast.
The report also contains data on the main environmental conflicts involving traditional fishing communities in 14 states of Brazil. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 15/07/2016)
