Rio de Janeiro (Agenzia Fides) - The celebrations for the 70 years of presence of the Friars Minor Conventual in Latin America and the Caribbean begins today in Rio de Janeiro. For three days, from July 13 to 15, conferences, cinema discussion and a concluding Mass, will help to retrace the steps of the Franciscan evangelization of South America.
If the occurrence affects the whole of Latin America and the Caribbean, the appointment is particularly felt in the "Province of St. Francis of Assisi", in Brazil. On March 28, 1946 some US Friars of the "Province of the Immaculate Conception" arrived in Brazil in order to create a stable presence. The choice fell on Rio de Janeiro. Their attempt followed what had already been tried, without success, at the beginning of '900, by some confreres of the Province of Genoa in Honduras and the Roman Province in Minas Gerais. Three years after the North American pioneers were joined by two Italian friars, who left from the Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua and headed towards Santos, in Brazil.
In 1970 the region was erected Provincial Custody and finally Province of São Francisco de Assis on 23 September 1991. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 13/07/2016)
