AMERICA/VENEZUELA - Mgr. Porras: "An unacceptable situation, where are the State security organs?"

Merida (Agenzia Fides) - The Archbishop of Merida, His Exc. Mgr. Baltazar Porras, has strongly condemned the attack on a group of seminarians which occurred on 1 July in Merida (see Fides 02/07/2016). "Everything seems to indicate (...) that behind this fact there are people who are linked to the government (of Merida), some even with an official position, apparently, member of government bodies", said the Archbishop in an interview broadcast by "Union Radio" radio station.
Mgr. Porras said that the small group of students was beaten, were completely stripped and robbed of their property, while they were on their way to class in the vicinity of the Federation of University Centres of Merida, where Lilian Tintori, wife of jailed opposition politician, Leopoldo Lopez, had to give a lecture.
"The young seminarians, who were going to English class, were put against the wall, they were asked if they were "Chavistas or whether they belonged to the opposition" and when they said they were seminarians, the anger and violence of the attackers increased.
The letter sent to Fides noted that the severity of the episode is enhanced by the fact that the police report was not accepted, as made by members of the political party of Voluntad Popular opposition, said the Archbishop.
