Cairo (Agenzia Fides) - Researcher Mina Thabet, linked to groups for the defense of human rights, was released on Monday, June 20 after an Egyptian court ordered his release after paying a bail of 10 thousand Egyptian pounds ($ 1,127). The young activist, who is part of the team that provids legal advice to dissidents as well as the family of murdered Italian student Giulio Regeni, (whose tortured body was found on February 3 in a ditch on the road between Cairo and Alexandria), was taken from his home last May 19 by police officers in plain clothes. He was charged with suspicions of his alleged connections to terrorist groups of Islamic origin. In recent days, the prosecution had also appealed - rejected by the court - against his release on bail.
According to collaborators and lawyers related to the researcher, the physical condition of Mina Thabet was severely compromised by weeks of isolation in al Salam police station. "What really hurts" Mina Thabet had reported in a message posted on the Egyptian Coordination for Rights and Freedoms, ECRF, it is not what I went through, but charges of being part of terrorist groups to which I have always opposed".
