San Juan (Agenzia Fides) - Religious leaders of Puerto Rico and the United States met yesterday, and meetings also continue today, with US Senators to urge them to support the legislation of the debt restructuring of Puerto Rico, which the House passed last week. Leaders, including priest Enrique Camacho, head of Catholic Charities affiliated to Caritas Puerto Rico, will lead a moment of prayer and attend a briefing with some members of the House of Representatives, at the United States Senate.
"Religious leaders know the urgency of the situation and their role of religious leaders in the forefront of the humanitarian crisis", observes Eric LeCompte, executive director of Jubilee USA Network. "Until we have a solution, every day that passes by means more pain and damage for the people of Puerto Rico" emphasizes LeCompte in the note sent to Fides.
The bill for Puerto Rico provides a stable economic operation entitled "PROMESA" (now HR 5278), which offers tools to renegotiate the debt and establishes a tax supervisory board (see Fides 20/05/2016). (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 17/06/2016)
