AFRICA/KENYA - New intervention of religious leaders to denounce "hate speech"

Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) - "We have taken note of the rising cases of hate speech and war mongering associated with particular politicians. This trend is worrying and must not be allowed to take root in the Country’s political culture", say the religious leaders of Kenya, in a new intervention on the increasing political tension ahead of the 2017 general elections (see Fides 30/05/2016) .
In a joint statement read out on June 14 by His Exc. Mgr. Cornelius Korir, Bishop of Eldoret and President of the "Justice and Peace" Commission, and by Reverend Peter Karanja, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), the religious leaders demand the arrest and immediate trial for those who deliver inflammatory speeches.
"Considering that the Country is preparing for the general elections next year, all pending cases of hate speech must be dealt with expeditiously and those found culpable convicted".
The leaders who signed the statement belong to the Kenya Episcopal Conference, the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), the Evangelical Alliance of Kenya (EAK), the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM), the National Muslim Leaders Forum (NAMLEF), the Organization of African Instituted Churches (OAIC), the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
