Nyala (Agenzia Fides) – Coptic Orthodox monk Gabriel, kidnapped on Thursday, April 14 in the city of Nyala, Sudan's state capital of South Darfur (see Fides 16/04/2016) has been released. His confreres of the monastery of St. Anthony were able to embrace him after a seizure which lasted forty days. He was kidnapped, according to local sources consulted by Agenzia Fides, by a group of armed men who had moved away from the place of seizure aboard a jeep, after having tied and beaten two people who were with the monk. The priest was taken not far from the Refugee Camp of Atash.
Sources of the Coptic Orthodox Church - reports Copts United Agency - stated that the monk was released without paying any ransom. Previously, local media reported rumors that Father Gabriel’s release would be possible after paying a ransom amounting to five million Sudanese pounds (about 735mila euro).
