Santiago (Agenzia Fides) - A group of nuns came out from their monastic cells to meet other women who live behind prison bars. Seventy-six cloistered nuns from Santiago del Chile, went to meet the prisoners of the Female Penitentiary Centre, on the day of the Jubilee of contemplative life, for the Holy Year of Mercy.
Yesterday, Sunday, May 22, was a special day in that prison: not only was there the Archbishop of Santiago, Cardinal Ricardo Ezzati, and the Vicar for Consecrated Life, Mgr. Jorge Concha, but also 71 contemplative sisters who interrupted their seclusion to attend Mass and to have a moment to meet many other women prisoners.
During the homily Cardinal Ezzati said: "I do not know exactly if in the history of Santiago, in its 400 years, we have seen what we have seen today" referring to the nuns who left the convent to meet other women. At the end of the Mass, the nuns sang a traditional Chilean song to the Virgin. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 23/05/2016)
