Managua (Agenzia Fides) – Two years have gone by since the Bishops of the Episcopal Conference of Nicaragua (CEN) delivered the document "En Búsqueda de Nuevos Horizontes, para una Nicaragua mejor" (Seeking new horizons for a better Nicaragua, see Fides 22/05/2014) to President Daniel Ortega. However, President Ortega still still today has never answered the letter (see Fides 04/06/2014).
In the document of 21 May 2014, the Bishops had submitted the political, the nation's social and economic problems. His Exc. Mgr. Jose Baez, Auxiliary Bishop of Managua, said in a message sent to the media that during the meeting with Ortega in 2014, the President was asked to make efforts to ensure a transparent electoral process: on November 6, 2016 in fact presidential elections will be held.
"We Bishops had asked the President to give his word of honor that this year the elections will be held in a transparent, honest manner and with national and foreign observers. This request remains essential for national stability, since electoral fraud could trigger a situation of violence and confrontation that no one wants to see", said Mgr. Baez.
