AFRICA/NIGERIA - Archbishop of Lagos: "Stop the attacks against farmers"

Abuja (Agenzia Fides) - Mgr. Alfred Adewale Martins, Archbishop of Lagos, has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari so that the government intervenes to put an end to the massacres committed by Fulani herdsmen in the south of the country (see Fides 02/05/2016).
According to a statement sent to Agenzia Fides, the Archbishop has condemned the killings of farmers along the so-called "middle-belt", that divides the north and south of Nigeria, and the bloody incursions of Fulani herdsmen in some places in the south, Ukpabi and halo, complaining about the careless attitude of the police, that pushes those who commit these crimes to feel "above the law".
In the meantime the attacks continue. According to press reports, a Fulani herdman said he is responsible for the beheading of a woman and the serious wounding of two others in a village of Delta. According to the government, the attacks attributed to Fulani herdsmen are actually committed by a faction of Boko Haram Islamist sect. The Minister of Agriculture, Heineken Lokpobiri, said that those arrested in connection with recent attacks do not speak Fulani or other Nigerian languages, hinting that they are foreign terrorists.
