Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - "Venezuela is heading toward a violent confrontation if those who have power do not leave" said His Exc. Mgr. Roberto Luckert Leon, Archbishop of Coro and President of the "Justice and Peace" Commission. Mgr. Luckert, during a radio speech, referred to how the government manages the examination of the signatures collected by the opposition to call a referendum against the president by 2016. On May 2, in fact, the opposition presented nearly two million signatures to the National Electoral Council in support of a referendum for the revocation of President Nicolas Maduro’s office, but according to local information sent to Fides, the count is too slow and seems to find bureaucratic problems every day that stop the procedure.
Speaking yesterday to Union Radio, the two-time presidential opposition candidate Henrique Capriles said that the Church could mediate in this tense political situation that the country is experiencing. Capriles calls for a date to carry out the referendum against Maduro, since according to the constitutional procedure a second referendum is needed to revoke the president.
