Mus (Agenzia Fides) - An historic Armenian cemetery dating back to the eighteenth century was desecrated in Mus, the capital of the Turkish eastern province. The news of the desecration was released yesterday from local sources consulted by Agenzia Fides. The act of sacrilege, denounced to the local judicial authorities, was probably carried out by vandals who thought they would find valuables in the tombs. Several graves were devastated, and the human remains in them were scattered throughout the cemetery. In the hours following the discovery of the desecration, Aziz Dagcin, president of the Union of Armenians in Samsin, submitted to the Ministry of Tourism a petition calling for a prompt restoration of the historic cemetery. "We call for an end to the desecration of our tombs: they do not contain anything other than the bones of our ancestors, who were buried wrapped in sheets. There are no valuables, and the same goes for our monasteries", said Aziz Dagcin to the local press.
Mus, located in the eastern part of Anatolia, already at the end of the eighteenth century was the scene of anti-Armenian pogroms and massacres, instigated by Ottoman authorities and often carried out by irregular Kurdish. (GV) (Agenzia Fides 12/05/2016)
