AMERICA/MEXICO - More than 9,000 children suffer domestic violence in the State of Michoacán

Morelia (Agenzia Fides) - In the Mexican state of Michoacán 15.5% of girls and 19.4% of boys between 6 to 9 years of age suffer abuse and beatings by parents. Data were collected by Children and Youth Study 2012. Equally alarming are the figures of sexual abuse of children in the same age group, 13.7%, surpassed only by Chiapas. According to information sent to Fides, Michoacán also records an infant mortality rate of 8.6 cases per year among children under one year of age, as evidenced by the last Census on the Population. The phenomenon of violence against children is a process that evolves slowly, the latest annual statistics are those presented by civil organizations. According to the Fundación en Pantalla Contra la Violencia Infantil, in 2014 Michoacán was in fourth place with regards to child exploitation, exceeded by Zacatecas, Sinaloa and Baja California.
