AFRICA/SOUTH AFRICA - An initiative promoted by the Catholic Church: "Taxi against human trafficking"

Johanneburg (Agenzia Fides) - "Taxi against human trafficking". This is the initiative promoted by the Catholic Church in South Africa to raise awareness among taxi drivers to fight this human and social evil. The project was presented in a three-day conference, from 12 to 15 April, organized by the Counter Trafficking in Persons Office CTIP of the South African Catholic Bishops Conference (SACBC), in collaboration with superiors of religious institutes.
"Human trafficking and especially child trafficking is prevalent is South Africa", said Sister Melanie O'Connor, coordinator of CTIP.
"Not only is there internal problem of human trafficking but many of those between the ages of 14 and 23 are trafficked from across our borders by individual agents and organised syndicates".
On April 14, Taxi owners and Taxi drivers gathered at Harties Taxi Rank in Hartbeespoort under Madibeng Municipality in the North West Province, to show their solidarity and lend their support to SACBC in its initiative to fight tirelessly against the problem of Human Trafficking. On that occasion Sister Melanie stressed the very important role carried out by taxi drivers to combat Human Trafficking, by reporting to the authorities suspicious transfers of passengers with minors.
