Estelí (Agenzia Fides) - "It hurts me, as a citizen and as pastor, (...), especially when we talk about a person who followed appropriate channels to raise the issue, but it seems that things are even worse than before. This will promote the law of the jungle", said His Exc. Mgr. Juan Abelardo Mata Guevara, S.D.B Bishop of Esteli, with regards to the murder of the mayor of the community of Ayapal, Andrés Cerrato. The murder took place on April 18, but was reported only yesterday, 20 April, to the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (Cenidh), by the administrators of the Independent Liberal Party (PLI).
The fact is upsetting the whole country, because about a month ago, on March 12, Cerrato had attended a meeting with Mgr. Mata to condemn the violent acts of the army in the area, including the raid at Cerrato’s house, to threaten the family on charges of covering members of some armed group in the area.
Although last night the army colonel Guevara Rocha, who is the official spokesperson, declared that "the army of Nicaragua never carries out such raids", a group of politicians supported the Nicaraguan Pro Human Rights Association's complaint because many were present at the meeting on12 March.
