Istanbul (Agenzia Fides) - An exhibition of postcards was inaugurated in recent days at the Tophane-i Amire Culture and Arts Center, sponsored by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which offers a historical testimony of the vibrant indirect apostolic work carried out despite a thousand difficulties by Christian missionaries in Anatolia territories under the Ottoman Empire. The exhibition displays postcards belonging to Orlando Carlo Calumeno, the largest private collector of old postcards from Anatolia, and most of the material is connected to the missionary activity that took place in the territories of Turkey by members of congregations and Christian religious orders. The missionaries, mostly French, English and Italian explained Calumeno during the inauguration of the exhibition - printed postcards and distributed them in Europe as a way of thanking the benefactors and finding new donations in favor of the apostolic work. They were not postcards meant for tourism, but a way to offer the inhabitants of the countries of origin simple tools to learn about human worlds and reality at the time far away and unknown to the people of the Old Continent.
