ASIA/MYANMAR - One child out of 5 goes to work instead of going to school

Yangon (Agenzia Fides) - One Burmese child out of 5, between 10 and 17 years of age, goes to work instead of going to school, compromising their personal and professional development as well as affecting the prospect for the future. The data emerged from the report titled Employment and Industry which collects some results of the census carried out in 2014 in the field of work. According to this document, 1 million and 700 thousand children are out of the education system because they work. The report, which was sent to Agenzia Fides, does not take into account the situation of 1 million 100 thousand stateless Rohingya, and also highlights the situation of the over 65-year-old Burmese, where 1 out of 5 continues to work, in the field of agriculture, fishing or wood. There is also a strong gender discrimination, given that 85% of men between 15 and 64 years of age work compared to only half of the women in the labor market. That of 2014 was the first census in 30 years. In total, 51 million people live in Myanmar, including the Rohingya in Rakhine State.
