AFRICA/DR CONGO - "Justice and Peace" denounces: "The hunger for money is killing us"

Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - "For over 20 years we have been through rough moments with incalculable consequences on our daily life and our ecosystem" says the statement of the "Justice and Peace" Diocesan Commission of the Archdiocese of Bukavu, capital of South Kivu province in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, which like that of North Kivu, has for years been destabilized by the presence of various armed groups.
A situation which, according to the note sent to Fides, is now ingrained in the minds of the inhabitants of the region. "Open your eyes and you will see the walking corpses in a decadent environment", said "Justice and Peace", in an attempt to shake the conscience.
The picture described in a note is dramatic: wives and husbands who try to escape with family assets; young girls raped; unemployed youth who join gangs, hunger that devastates entire villages in a region rich in food resources. "Justice and Peace" denounces the lack of a national policy and the fact that "rifles and certain ideologies have killed men and especially massacred our traditional culture".
"For money one can kill, lie, cheat, rape, and unfortunately it seems that the wicked are those who are successful!" says the note, but at the same time appeals to "to look at reality in the face and to reconcile with the Lord". (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 11/04/2016)
