AMERICA/BOLIVIA - First International Congress on human rights and Catholic thought in Latin America

La Paz (Agenzia Fides) - At the end of the First International Congress on human rights and Catholic thought in Latin America, which took place from April 7 to 9, the Bolivian "San Pablo" Catholic University (UCB) stressed the contribution of the Catholic Church for the defense and observance of individual, collective human rights of peoples. The Secretary-General of UCB, Carlos Derpic Salazar, proposed a historical presentation of documents and initiatives undertaken by priests, Bishops and the Bolivian Episcopal Conference (CEB) at different times in the history of the country.
"Bolivia has a prophetic Church which announces the good news and denounces injustice", said Derpic, listing the names of several priests, including José Prats, Luis Espinal, Jorge Centellas, and others, especially in the western part of the country .
Among the pastoral letters of the CEB published under various governments, quoted by Derpic, there was also "Dignity and freedom" of 1972, which denounced the differences of education in cities and rural areas. The letter asked: "How can those who commit violations against human dignity call themselves Christians?". This letter has prevented Garcia Meza to implement the "State Security Law".
The Chancellor of the UCB, Marco Antonio Fernandez, at the end of the academic act thanked the participants from eight countries (Italy, Ecuador, Spain, United States, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Bolivia) quoting St. John Paul II, who at the United Nations Assembly (1995), stated: "We must not be afraid of the future. We must not fear man (...) we can build a culture of freedom in the coming century (XXI)".
