ASIA/INDIA - A forum of NGOs to be closer to the poor

New Delhi (Agenzia Fides) – To set up a national network of non-governmental agencies to improve and better coordinate the work of support and development among the poorest of society: with this spirit the Indian Jesuits created the "Lok Manch" ("People's Forum "), after a meeting which brought together over 120 delegates in Delhi of 100 Indian organizations. As reported in a note sent to Fides, the forum intends to even work at a culture, awareness and political level, promoting laws and policies in favor of the marginalized and vulnerable groups, encouraging the growth of a secular and democratic nation, which can promote the development, well-being and equality among all citizens.
The Jesuit Fr. Sunnybhai, among the promoters of the forum, indicated the urgent issues that India faces, such as hunger, poverty, suicides committed by farmers burdened by debts.
One example cited was the "National Food Security Act", approved by the Government in 2013, a measure in favor of at least 400 million poor peasants, but implemented only partially, and in some states of the Indian federation.
The forum aims to establish an effective network among the many existing NGOs in India, working to combat poverty and to promote the development of the poor, so as to coordinate the work and be more incisive at a social political level. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 08/04/2015)
