Siuna (Agenzia Fides) – There was great joy for the laying of the foundation stone on April 3, of what will be the main church in Siuna, a very poor Nicaraguan municipality, abandoned by state services, and part of the North Atlantic Autonomous Region. The celebration brought together thousands of Catholics and priests of the parishes of Siuna, Bonanza, Rosita, Mulukukú, Waslala, Paiwas, San Pedro del Norte, Prinzapolka, La Cruz de Río Grande.
The church will be built on an area donated by the municipal government of Siuna at a cost of about 1 million US dollars, which will be collected from different sources, including the government and the Pacific parishes.
"People have already offered 100 calves and some people who have relatives abroad have already begun to raise money. There is a lot of work to be done to ensure that there are necessary funds", said His Exc. Mgr. Pablo Ervin Schmitz Simon, O.F.M. Cap., Bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Bluefields during the Mass celebrated in the open on the site where the church will be built. The church can hold 800 people and its construction will take two years. It also provides a space for outdoor Mass when there will be a greater number of people.
