Chiconela (Agenzia Fides) – The Opera Don Orione opens a new community in Chiconela, in the Diocese of Xai-Xai, 200 km from the capital of Mozambique, Maputo. The vast territory entrusted to the Orionini by the Bishop of Xai-Xai, a poor rural area includes three areas: Chiconela, Zonguene and Novela, where there are 11 small chapels, around which Christian communities gather. The first Don Orione community of the new mission is formed by Fr. José Geraldo da Silva (Brazilian), Fr. Isaac Vondoame (Togolese), who will be joined by a cleric from Mozambique in June.
The first presence of the Orionini in Mozambique dates back to 2003, when they reached the outskirts of Maputo, in Bagamoyo, followed by the structure for the disabled in Zimpeto. Now the agreement between the Bishop of Xai-Xai, His Exc. Mgr. Lucio Muamdula, and the Congregation provides, in addition to the custody of the Parish and the building of the church that will be dedicated to St. Luigi Orione, also to the realization of a school arts and crafts for the young in Chiconela.
"What is happening in Chiconela - says Don Flavio Peloso, Superior General of the Opera Don Orione who these days is on the spot to inaugurate the new mission - is fruit of the Passover of the risen Lord. The patron of this new parish, St. Luigi Orione, taught us to bring the good news along with the works of charity towards the poor and needy brothers". (SL) (Agenzia Fides 30/03/2016)
