AFRICA/BURUNDI - Destitute, malnourished, displaced children

Bujumbura (Agenzia Fides) - The children of Burundi, who account for half of a population of ten million people, live in the most destitute Country in the world, where most of the population survives on less than $ 1 a day. According to data reported from the Index Global Hunger, 3 out of 5 children suffer from stunting. The most recent harvests have been poor and food prices have gone up making it harder for families to feed their children. In addition, access to basic services such as health and education are out of reach for many people in need. Violence in and around schools keeps growing, and since April last year the living conditions of children have deteriorated drastically. More than 200 have been captured and imprisoned with adult offenders.
More than 237,000 Burundians, half of them children, have fled to neighboring Countries. Other 25,000 are internally displaced. The small children who continue to flee are more vulnerable and at greater risk of being exploited, abducted or kidnapped by armed groups. Thousands are those who are injured and traumatized. The organization Spaces of Childhood Friends are helping thousands of youngsters, one fourth of whom show signs of psychological trauma. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 21/03/2016)
