AFRICA/KENYA - Hygiene and health accessible to even the most vulnerable people

Merti (Agenzia Fides) - Speaking of access to adequate sanitation and good hygiene practices may seem obvious. In Kenya the majority of the population, about 70%, have no clean and functional toilets. A fact that has serious consequences because it is closely connected to the spread of diseases like cholera, typhoid and diarrhea which each year still cause 19,000 deaths. To cope with this emergency, the Medical Cooperation Committee, in addition to supporting the health facilities of the territory, organizes training sessions and awareness raising with communities.
A note sent to Agenzia Fides says that in February, the NGO was in Malka Galla, a small village, 45 km from Merti, in the county of Isiolo. Here, through the activities of the Theatre of the Oppressed, the CCM experts managed to involve 250 students, adults and seniors on sensitive and important issues such as the use of latrines, personal hygiene, cleanliness of the environment in which they live. The CCM was established in 1968 by a group of Italian doctors convinced that health and access to basic health care should be guaranteed rights also for the most vulnerable people in the poorest countries. To date, doctors and experts of NGOs are present in Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 18/03/2016)
