AMERICA/PANAMA - Seven hundred Cuban emigrants in critical situation call for a diplomatic solution

Panama City (Agenzia Fides) - Cardinal José Luis Lacunza, Bishop of David, has received a report on the situation of the Cuban people in Paso Canoas, and announced that he will inform the Country's Bishops and together reflect on the matter. The letter sent to Fides by Caritas Panama, informs that Siexdel Candanedo, head of Caritas in Chiriqui reported that there are still more than 700 Cubans in Paso Canoas including children, pregnant women and the sick. Candanedo has also said that Cardinal Lacunza will meet the priests of Paso Canoas and civil society groups to try to improve the conditions of immigrants.
Caritas in Chiriqui has mobilized to assist Cuban migrants, but the situation is critical, because the government is not providing them with necessary food.
According to a first report of the "Justice and Peace" organization of the Catholic Church, in past days many Cubans arrived at the Panama-Costa Rica border to ask for help on their journey to the United States. A statement from the group of Cuban immigrants who arrived in Paso Canoas thanked the Government of Panama for their assistance to the 1,300 Cubans who arrived there, but now the situation has become critical and ask the State for a diplomatic solution.
