Paris (Agenzia Fides) - Almost 16 million girls in the whole world aged between 6 and 11 will never go to school, twice the number of boys in this situation, if present trends continue. The alarm comes from UNESCO, United Nations Organisation for Education, Science and Culture which, in view of the International Women’s Day , sheds light on this serious gap which exists especially in the Arab world, Sub-Saharan Africa, and southern and western Asia.
In Sub-Saharan Africa some 9.5 million girls will never enter a classroom, compared with 5 million boys. In this region more than 30 million primary school age minors do not go to school, and although some will begin school later, many especially girls will never have the opportunity. This discrimination however is even more pronounced in southern and western Asia, where an estimated 4 million girls will not go to school compared to just under 1 million boys.
