Santa Cruz de El Seybo (Agenzia Fides) - The population of the province of El Seibo, east of the Dominican Republic, near the tourist resort of Bavaro and Punta Cana, is appalled by the brutal evictions that are happening these days. The alarm was launched, in a note sent to Agenzia Fides, by the local Radio Seybo station, according to which the Compañía Central Romana, owner of 70% of the land in the province, extends its sugarcane plantations every day. Its economic power is such that its way of acting seems normal, since over 40 years has enjoyed total impunity.
The terror sown by armed agents of the Central Romana continues to anguish the families of Villa Guerrero de Santa Cruz in El Seybo, where 60 humble houses were destroyed within seconds. The family lived on these territories for two years, and in a vile and cowardly manner saw their fundamental rights and dignity violated in an unseemly manner. Young children are petrified and now express their fears through sad drawings with dark colors. The elderly, young people and children themselves wear black in mourning, demanding respect.
