OCEANIA/AUSTRALIA - Fifty years of compassion

Sydney (Agenzia Fides) - Caritas Australia, will launch its annual Lenten campaign, "Project Compassion", Australia's largest humanitarian fundraising and awareness-raising campaigns, and will also celebrate its 50 years of helping the world's poor during the Jubilee of Mercy 2016. As Fides learns each year "Project Compassion", which runs through the six weeks of Lent, brings together thousands of supporters and benefactors in all the dioceses who, in solidarity with the poor, and to help fight poverty, promote justice and dignity in the world.
Members of Caritas Australia have expressed their gratitude to parish communities, schools, ecclesial movements and associations for their generous donations in all these years. Last year it achieved a record-breaking $11.57 million.The money raised also provides for long-term development programs in more than 40 countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific.
During the special Year of Mercy, Bishop Bill Wright will officially launch "Project Compassion" in Newcastle. "Project Compassion" has helped and transformed millions of lives in 50 years of service: we give witness of
faith, compassion and generosity to the most vulnerable members of the global family", said the Bishop, hoping for a commitment and an effort of charity in all the local communities, and noting that this year the focus of the project will be on education. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 09/02/2016)
