Masaya (Agenzia Fides) - The parliament of Nicaragua opened the debate to choose a judge for the Supreme Electoral Council (CSE), replacing Judge José Luis Villavicencio, belonging to the Frente Sandinista de Liberacion Nacional, FSLN ruling party, who resigned yesterday. To be elected, a candidate must receive 60% of the votes in Parliament, ie at least 56 votes. The case is urgent because he is the second member of the CSE that resigns in a month. The CSE is composed of seven judges, currently four of them are Sandinistas.
The President of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, has nominated the former Ambassador of Nicaragua in Argentina and a member of the Special Committee for the defense of the rights of children and adolescents, Norma Moreno.
With regards to this proposal, Cardinal Leopoldo Brenes, Archbishop of Managua, noted that parties should make their proposal. "I think all Nicaraguans who follow a political line, have the right to candidate themselves. What matters is that other parties propose their candidate, because according to what I read in the media, Frente made its proposal, now it is the turn of other political parties to propose", said Cardinal Brenes before presiding over Mass in Masaya, last Sunday.
"We must listen to what the Holy Father says when it comes to politics, when he reminds politicians not to despise others, to make positive proposals for the people. I hope that the commission of the Assembly manages to choose the right person, so he will be a point of reference in the future for the upcoming elections", said the Cardinal.
In November, Nicaragua will elect its president, vice president, 90 national MPs and 20 representatives for the Central American Parliament. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 26/01/2016)
