Ouagadougou (Agenzia Fides) - "The wounds inflicted to people are felt by the whole nation. We invite you to remember and pray for the victims, the injured, their families and their friends", said a statement of the Bishops' Conference of Burkina Faso and Niger, sent to Fides, in which the faithful are invited to pray for the victims of the assaults perpetrated in Ouagadougou on the night between 15 and 16 January, by members of AQIM (Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb).
"Our only weapon is prayer" underline the Bishops. "May all believers increase the ardor of prayer as we have done in other circumstances. Our plea for national unity will always be our strength", the statement concluded.
The toll of the assault against Hotel Splendid and the nearby restaurant-coffee bar "Le Cappuccino" is 30 victims. Three assailants were killed in the firefight to free hostages in the hotel, while according to some sources other three terrorists managed to escape.
Meanwhile international mobilization increases to demand the release of 2 Australian doctors (and not Austrian) kidnapped in Baraboulé in northern Burkina Faso, at the border with Niger and Mali.
The announcement of the kidnapping of the two 80-year-olds took place a few hours after the attack in the capital. The abduction was claimed by Ansar al Dine jihadist group. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 20/01/2016)
