Bogota (Agenzia Fides) - An appeal to all Colombian people, and in particular to rulers, "to be authentic instruments of reconciliation, justice and peace", was launched by the Bishops in their Christmas message. In the message, sent to Fides, they say: "To those who have chosen the path of weapons and violence, corruption and injustice, we ask you to discover in the nativity scene the true sense of greatness and wealth, the promotion of human rights and values that build society".
The Bishops recall that on Christmas day we celebrate the birth of Jesus, and this "should lead us to a moment of joy, fraternal meeting, generous sharing, sincere forgiveness and peace with our brothers". The text, signed by the President of the Episcopal Conference of Colombia, His Exc. Mgr. Luis Augusto Castro Quiroga, recalls that Christmas is not just a holiday, but becomes an invitation to the community to show solidarity "with so many people who suffer from affection, worthy of a place to sleep, daily food, peace because of violence or opportunity to move forward".
The Bishops' message comes at a time when the country is eagerly waiting for lasting peace after a conflict that has lasted more than 50 years. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 22/12/2015)
