VATICAN - XIX Plenary - CEP 2015: young Churches and proclamation of the Gospel, between growth and instability

Tuesday, 1 December 2015

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The young Churches today encounter factors that weaken evangelization. This is what Cardinal Peter Turkson said today on the second day of the Plenary Assembly of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples (see Fides 27 and 30/11/2015).
" It comes out clearly - said the President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace - that the impressive numeric growth" of the Young Churches "is accompanied with the development of instability in major parts of these territories". But there are some elements and fields that enhance the work of evangelization, such as the formation of the laity and the process of "true and balanced inculturation of the Gospel". The activity of the Church that attracts people mostly to Christ in the Young churches is Charity work. On the other hand, noted Cardinal Turkson, one must confront oneself with "neo-Pentecostal groups that have presented a gospel made of material prosperity, prestige, health".
"Today the young Churches contribute to the universal mission of the Church - the Cardinal continued – by sending diocesan priests and religious in the churches that need them" as in Europe and America.
"Church migrant": the phenomenon of migration that has recently taken a new planetary dimension reveals the growing instability in the developing countries. The Cardinal posed two questions during the Assembly: How can the Congregation for the Evangelization of peoples help to stabilize the situation of these societies so as to slow the migratory flux? and how can the presence of these refugees in Europe bring the universal Church to rediscover her prophetic voice?
